Ring in the New Year
Wow, here we are on the last day of 2009. As I sit and reflect back to all the wonderful opportunities I've had and all the amazing friendships I've created, I am finding myself so very grateful. Gratefulness is a great tool to softening our thoughts and our bodies. It also allows for an easier pathway to creating a healthier and happier lifestyle. Take some time today to reflect back on what you are grateful for. Perhaps you will write about it in a journal or just sit and ponder all the wonderful things you've been able to experience. Go ahead and give yourself permission to do whatever it is that you feel necessary to cultivate gratitude. Then sit back and experience the feeling. Enjoy this day and be well. Peace, Mary Jo

New Year New You Opportunity
With 2009 almost behind us and a 2010 just a few days away, it's the perfect time to contemplate your hopes, dreams and desires. We all do it. It's completely natural. Some of us are very capable to move on from perhaps a less than ideal year while others sometimes need a little help. In 2008 I was feeling like I needed help in order to create an amazing 2009. Want to know what I did? I committed to making 2009 the best year ever. I didn't care about the coulda, woulda, shoulda's. I let it all go and focused solely on the New Year. Guess what? I had the best year of my life...so far. And so 2010 is going to be even better. I am challenging each one of you to make 2010 your best year ever. Go ahead and committ to yourself. And remember, you can't move forward always lookin in the rear view mirror. Be well & make it an amazing day!

Green Smoothie Detox
Earlier this month I enrolled in a green smoothie detox program. It was a five day detox plan and it set me on a path that was very clear and inspiring. By simply committing to five days of whole food green smoothies I was able to obtain a sense of peace and mindfulness like never experienced before. And while I still needed to have a light salad a on occasion a piece of break every other day or so, the rewards of this cleanse were amazing. Stay tuned for more details and the opportunity to take part in your very own green smoothie detox regimen. In the meantime, be well.

Merry Holiday Time
This is the wonderful time of year where we connect or reconnect with family and friends. For some, the season can be very joyous and for others it might bring tears of sorrow and, in some cases, tears of joy. This holiday season I spent more time enjoying my life and the gifts that I was blessed with already, instead of going out and buying to make me happy. And so while I sit and wait for my beautiful son Trevor to rise and shine (and open the few but very meaningful gifts from Santa :-), I am experiencing a sense of peace and holiday cheer like never before. My wish for you is that you too will experience the merriest and most peaceful holiday spirit during this holiday season. Peace, happiness and love! Mary Jo

Rock My World!
Last night I learned a lesson of a lifetime. While driving home from my "day job" the job that I do to get by and pay the bills, I was hit by a truck. The driver was a man who was hurrying to get home. In his attempt at hurrying he rear ended me causing my car to hit a huge tree, take out a street sign and eventually land just a few feet from the entrance to the front door of a family I was going to visit. Life is strange the way it helps us to learn. As I sat in the car I felt a feeling of relief. I knew I was hurt, and I knew that my life had hit a "bump in the road." A time when I realized I must choose how I wish to live without the constant feeling of pressure, pressure and more pressure. I am so sure that God, in his beautiful way of creating the Universe, does not want his children to live in a constant state of distress. I mean come on, I teach people how to de-stress. And so while I am home recuperating and loving my time with my animal healers and my sons, I am setting intentions that I know the Universe will allow to come to full fruition and then some! My wish is for yal out there to do the same. Set intentions and live each day as if it's your last. Be smart. Be passionate and remember to be good to You!

Happiness Happens Now
Today during yoga class I picked up my happiness book and happily read a passage to my yogi friends. Happiness, as I know it, can be a very easily cultivated state of mind and being. Here's how...next time you have a low mood or unhappy feeling you simply release it and focus on the now. Focusing on the past and the future can cause unsettling feelings for some people. So the logical thing to do is to focus on the now, letting the past stay in the past and allowing the future to unfold, all the time knowing that you are exactly where you need to be at this very moment. So the next time you're feeling low or stressed, take a deep breath and let the feeling pass. Focus on what you have to be grateful for and smile! Everybody loves you. Now it's your turn to love you. Be well.

Life Transformation
Today I am hosting a teleclass called "End Emotional Eating." While I was preparing for this talk I began to see a pattern in the materials. Every section I was reviewing had to do with transformation. Transforming our relationship with food. Transforming our relationship with others. And of course...transforming our relationship with ourself! Most of the time, this is the most challenging one to deal with. Imagine that...we could be our own worst enemy. But I can tell you that it doesn't have to be that way. You can redecide to start being more compassionate and loving toward yourself. Go ahead and try it for one day. Get up tomorrow morning and feel love and compassion for yourself before you even get out of bed. When you go out for the day, give that love and compassionate feeling to others. Sort of like giving them a beautiful gift before the holiday even gets here. Share your experiences with me on my blog! Have a wonderful day! Mary Jo

Gluten Free Perhaps?
Have you ever felt fuzzy mentally and a just a little bit off after eating certain foods? Wonder what this whole gluten thing is all about? As many of you know, I've transformed my health and my life by making simple changes to my diet and my lifestyle. Each time I mastered one little thing I moved onto something else. I am not at the point where certain things like breads and wheat products may be contributing to foggy or fuzzy thinking. The best thing about this whole process is that I found a resource that I will be using for the next 30 days. It's a guide to gluten free eating which I learned will also help with emotional eating. Now...I don't have any issues with emotional eating at this point but I know that many of you out there do. If you'd like to join me now or in the future in learning about gluten free eating, contact me via website or blog post. You can always call too at 716 410 4504. I'd be happy to talk with you about gluten free. In the meantime, be well. Mary Jo

Yoga Studio Open
Last night I opened Hot Yoga Fredonia in lovely downtown Fredonia, NY. After our first one hour class we enjoyed hot tea from Wishberry, a little trendy yogi store located in the same building as the yoga studio. A huge thank you to everyone who came to the first class. While there was lots to learn for everyone, including me, I enjoyed meeting everyone and am so excited for our next class and for the remainder of this year's offerings. Stay tuned for new happenings and health and nutrition offerings from the studio. All the best! Mary Jo

Rest and Relaxation
When is the last time you took a vacation? If you're like me, you work very hard on a regular basis and could use a vacation every three or four months. But to be practical, one or two vacations per year is likely what happens. For me, it's been about a year since I last took a week long holiday. In just two days, I'm leaving for Mexico to get some sunshine, sleep and solitary time. Vacation to me has become a necessity, not a luxury. When I return I'll be sharing some of my island experiences with you. In the meantime, take a moment to share with me your last vacation experience! I'd love to hear from you.
BLUE PEARL YOGA
Last week while being away I found a cute little yoga studio. Actually, the facility was quite impressive as it was held in a very old Masonic Hall on Main Street in Batavia. Blue Pearl Yoga Studio owner Karen Reisdorf is the founder and instructor at the studio. Karen received her training at various places including Kripalu Institute in Massachusetts. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and felt very welcome by other students as well. And of course the hot tea was perfect! If you live in or near Batavia, her class is definately worth checking out! Thanks Karen!
CATCHING UP
Being away on business can take a toll on your home and office organization. Boy do I know this! I've been away on business for almost two weeks and the feeling of getting home and catching up can be daunting at times. One tip that I use to stay on track is doing just one thing at a time. Oh, I've had times when I've tried to do "multitasking" but from a practical and healthy standpoint, multitasking is not healthy. The brain cannot effectively handle more than one thing at a time. Think about it...years ago when our grandparents were alive there was no such thing as multitasking. Sure you can go ahead an multitask, and you will definately look like you multitask. Stress, confusion, forgetfulness and a feeling of heaviness can result from overload with multitasking. So the next time you are faced with having to mutitask, make a healthy choice. Try one thing at a time and see how productive and healthy you really can be! If you're feeling really overwhelmed from your daily tasks, give me a call and schedule your free health consultation. Learn how I can support you to create a healthier and happier life! Email me today at maryjo_33@msn.com

Off To Yoga
As many of you know, I love Bikram Yoga. I would practice every day if I lived close to a studio but instead, I drive almost 5o minutes one way to take class. Since joining yoga and practicing as much as possible, I have been able to stop feeling anxious, sleep better, lose weight and just plain old feel amazing! I started out doing hatha yoga followed by a few other types of yoga. The important thing for you is to start somewhere. You will be happily and peacefully amazed at the power of this simple practice called Yoga. Namaste!

TGIF
There aren't many days when I say "Thank God It's Friday" but this is definately one of them. With a busy week behind me and an equally busy and exciting week ahead of me, I am enjoying my Friday night at home with my amazing dog Bikram and a cup of calming tea. Rest is so important and what's more important is to recognize our need for it and to honor the signals from our bodies. So if you're feeling like you need a break, go ahead and give yourself one! Because if you don't do it, who will? So put your feet up, relax and enjoy the peace.

SUGAR BLUES WORKSHOP A SUCCESS
Last night I presented a "Beating the Sugar Blues" workshop at the Silver Creek Central School District in Silver Creek, NY. With nineteen people signed up for the event and over half of those attending, the event was a huge success. Participants gained insight into the role that sugar plays in our culture and in our lives. Many had those amazing "aha" moments and almost everyone signed up for a free health consultation. If you'd like to learn more about the role of sugar and it's harmful effects on health and wellbeing, give me a call today at 716.410.4504. I can help you bring sweetness into your life in other, more healthier ways.

What's new and good?
Have you ever stopped to realize how mixed up our world can be sometimes? From health care reform to the corrupt banking industry to food marketing. It can all be so confusing and scary. But I'm here to tell you that with just an ounce of common sense, all of those things can become very simple and easily sorted out. So much of it comes down to personal responsibility and logic. In the area of food, it's even simpler. Eating natural whole and fresh food is the key. Less chemicals, less additives and preservatives and more greens, grains, fruits and veggies. Next time you're at the supermarket, stick to the perimeter of the store. That's where most of the real food is! If you need support, schedule a free consultation with me. I'd be glad to support you in achieving vibrant health!

Healthy Healthy Chocolate
Last weekend while in NYC I met a colleague who sells healthy chocolate. She calls it healthy because it is low in sugar, organic, minimally processed and contains the super antioxidant berry called the acai berry. The chocolate is known as Xocai and it's absolutely delicious.
If you are interested in the product give me a call. I'd be happy to get you a supply! This amazing chocolate has been known to improve brain functioning and improve weight loss. What other great tasting product can do that?

Challenges to Eating Healthy
Yesterday I left my home and traveled to a small community in Batavia, NY. I will be here for the rest of the week and I am realizing just how user unfriendly the area is in regards to healthy food options. The only restaurant options for eating are fast food and restaurants that have highly processed foods. So I thought I'd visit the local Starbucks hoping to find a healthy sandwich or salad. No luck with that idea since they offer the broad menu in bigger cities and Batavia is not a big city. I honestly almost started to panic wondering how I'd survive this week and soon began to realize how mainstream America must think I'm a little nutty in my approach to health and wellness. Luckily I was able to get a refrigerator and microwave delivered to my room and I found a Wal-Mart down the road. I purchased some basic groceries and asked the kitchen staff to open my can of beans and albacore tuna. She gladly gave me a plate and utensils and I am now feeling good!
The next time you're challenged while on the road there are some things you can choose that are still great options. For example, fruits and plenty of water are great. Teas and salads are also good if they do not have preservatives or msg in them. It takes some investigating but from my point of view, I'm worth it. And you are too!

Stay Connected
I am on my way to the Big Applel again! I love that place:-) I guess you could say I feel very connected to the energy and the people. So while I'm away from my son and partner, I still have that inner connection to something greater than myself. It's a wonderful feeling. And of course I use blogging to stay in touch. As I was blogging today I though, "Hmmmm, I wonder if others would like to learn how to blog and stay in touch with family, friends, coworkers." As a result, my site now contains resources for you to use that will help you to create your very own blog! Check them out and play around. After all, it's all about staying connected. Comfort Foods
Have you ever had one of those days where all you want is what your mother used to feed you? Maybe it's toast with peanut butter or chicken soup. It could be anything actually. What are some of the foods you turn to for comfort? And what are some other things that you could turn to for comfort instead of food? As I have journeyed on the road to building my health coaching business I have needed comfort and support along the way. Gaining insight into why we crave our comfort foods is key to figuring out what we really need. But sometimes it's much simpler than that. I mean come on...the fact that we look for comfort foods is a dead giveaway! So the next time you head out for your best comfort food, start a conversation with yourself. Ask yourself, "Hmmm, what is it that I really need?" You might be surprised how effective it can be to ask yourself that one little question. Try it and get back to me! If you need more support around answering that question, sign up for one of my teleclasses at www.vibranthealthhappylife.com

BREATHE BABY BREATHE
Have you ever been so excited that you started to hyperventilate? Or perhaps you've had a scary incident that left you breathless. Either way, we obviously cannot live without breathe. And conversely, we can live an amazing life if we take the time to breathe deeply and relax into it. The power of breathe is widely accepted in yogic communities. My experience with the power of breathe is vast. But in order to experience some of the benefits of breathe, all one needs to do is to sit still for three to four minutes and breathe fully through your nose expanding your belly. Breathe slowly in through the nose and out through the nose. Try to keep your mind still. No thinking about bills that need to be paid or laundry that needs to be done. (That would be cheating but no one but you would know it.) Then begin to relax your spine and to allow the other parts of your body to relax. If your mind wanders, go back to focusing on the breathe. Do this in the morning and once during the day. You will be amazed at the benefits! Happy Breathing!

Louise Hay
Years ago I became acquainted with the work of Louise Hay, a transformational healer and woman ahead of her time. One of the books that I keep around, and have several copies of, is called "Heal Your Life." It is an amazing book and I use it frequently when I have a physical problem that I believe could be made better by simply changing my thinking. For example, the other day I had a pain in my ear and I was curious to see what Louise Hay had to say regarding a probably cause for such pain. So I opened the book and saw that it could have something to do with not liking what I was hearing. Now...we don't always have the awareness necessary to truly believe some of the things that Louise suggests could be happening within our bodies. But after using her book during my recovery from a 20 year battle with an eating disorder, and practicing her affirmations when I suffered from anxiety and depression, the woman's got something! Her insight is amazing and I have followed this woman since about 1999. This weekend I am making one of my dreams come true. I will be sitting in a room with Louise Hay and several others who are world leaders in the field of personal transformational and development. I have been so excited these past few days that I can barely contain myself! Stay tuned for details about the amazing information I'll be bringing back to you. Have a fabulous Friday!

One Day at a Time
Have you ever felt like life seems to go by so so fast. Almost too fast? I completely know the feeling and since starting my new career as a holistic health coach I have learned how to slow things down. While we like to think that we can get so much done by multitasking, sometimes multitasking is what contributes to life passing us by. Take for example, having to accomplish so much that you can barely remember what it is that you were supposed to be doing in the first place! Things begin to pile up and before you know it, you realize that multitasking might not be the answer. In that case, I typically take one task at a time going from beginning to end with the intention of completely finishing the task before moving onto the next. This has allowed me to improve my mental focus and get work done ar a steady and productive pace. The next time you start to feel overwhelmed, stop, take a deep breath, and start with one thing at a time. You''ll be amazed at your results.

Interesting Perceptions
Have you ever had one of those days where whatever could go wrong actually did go wrong? The kind when you get up in the morning and it starts with tripping over something the minute you get out of bed, followed by bumping into something before you make it to the bathroom, only to then have several things fall off the counter and onto your toe? I've definately have had those mornings. And lately I've started to view those events differentlly, sort of as a little experiment to see if I can change the course of my day. In the past I used to get upset and carry those feelings with me throughout the entire day. I just knew that day would get worse. And actually it did! For me, all of that has changed. I now view those same events as very interesting little things that I then get to choose my reaction to. Typically I can be heard saying things like, "Hmm, this is going to be an interesting day. " Followed by a smile. And of course when I have the privilege of tripping later in the day while walking to my office, I tend to smile, look over my shoulder, and share the laugh with the guy who saw me trip. It definately does make for a more amusing day and an opportunity for me to make others smile! Keep smiling.

Environment and its impact on
When I was a little girl I remember watching science fiction movies. One movie that has never left me is Godzilla and Godzooki. If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, google godzilla. Godzilla and Godzooki were basically two giant size dinosaurs who fought over a woman while throwing the woman around like she was a rag doll. I remember my brothers absolutely loving the show...repeats and all. I, on the other hand, was frightened by the movie. It might seem like a small thing but environment really does have an impact on our personalities and perceptions. When exposed to such things at early ages, children can grow up to be fearful and timid. One way to avoid this is to be mindful of what you allow your children to watch. One interesting experiment is to go without TV for a month. I tried this with my teenage son and the impact was peacefully surprising. We had time for conversations, quiet time and inquisitive family time. It truly was a wonderfully enlightening environment. Go ahead and try it. Let me know your experience and the environment you were able to create for you and your family.
Connection
Recently I had a support group call for my eating disorder group. During the call we discussed the issue of connection. It was a great conversation. Participants definately felt some level of connection to others in the group and to themselves. Connection is so very important in recovery from an eating disorder. And I believe it is through our relationships with others that we can learn how to connect with self. The next time you're feeling disconnected, try to think of just one thing that wil keep you connected.

Being instead of doing.
Have you ever had a day where you were so tired it took you some time to just figure out that sleep was the missing ingredient? I had a day just like that this past Thursday. So often we get busy with our lives and daily tasks that we forget to slow down and smell the roses. We go from task to task not even realizing that we are missing out on the small beauties in life. Yesterday after returning from my office I decided to just sit on the couch and "be." After a few minutes of just being with myself I fell into a soft slumber. It was the best sleep I've experienced in quite sometime reminding me of the importance of being rather than doing. Try it sometime. Spend a little time just "being" with yourself. Tell me what you think.
Primary Food
Not everyone knows what primary food is so I thought it was only appropriate to talk about it today. When I hear the work primary I think of going to the grocery store and buying babyfood for my boys when they were small. And of course without appropriate nutrition (meaning food) babies don't grown properly. But more importantly, without love and proper attention, an infant can develop something called failure to thrive. In my prior career as a child protective services worker I have seen infants with failure to thrive. It's sad. So what does this have to do with primary food? Let's first talk about what primary food is and you will see what I'm talking about. Primary food is anything that we take into our being that is not real food. So for example, relationships are a form of primary food. They feed and nourish us in ways that food could never do. Career and spiritual practices are forms of primary food. Ever wonder why some jobs make you feel so good and another job you might have had was toxic? Yup...you guessed it. All primary foods. The trick is to make sure our primary foods are supporting and nourishing us. If they're not then guess what? You get to change that. Of course some may say, "easier said than done." And you're right. That's why I offer health coaching. I help people make choices that support their needs and goals. If you'd like to learn more about my philosophy and my programs, visit my website for details. And have a fabulous day!

Power Naps
Have you ever wondered about the benefits of napping? If you're like me, you might have thought that napping was a waste of time. It actually turns out that short naps can help to rejuvinate your body and your mind. If you're skeptical, go ahead and try it. I often take a drive to the waterfront, which is down the avenue from my office, on my lunch break and close my eyes for just a mere 20 minutes. When I wake, I feel like I've had a three hour sleep. Give it a try and let me know what your experience is!

Set up for Success
It's a Monday and I'm setting myself up for success. This is how I like to start my weeks. Each is a fresh new beginning and sometimes a new start to maintain my eating and my mood. Today I'll be enjoying simple dishes such as fresh herb salad with baby spinach and organic dressing (that you can get at your local natural food store or in the organic aisle at Tops or Webmans) and a simple brown rice recipe that includes some olive oil and a few chopped up veggies. You can add whatever you like and it doesn't have to be fancy. Brown rice and vegetables with a salad is a fabulous start to the day. Try it and let me know how you feel!

Shopping for almonds
The other day I asked my boyfriend to pick up some almonds for me at the store. After I got off the phone from our conversation I thought...."Hmm I'd better call him and tell him to read the label." When he got to the store he called me and asked if he should get the almonds that had about 7 or 8 other ingredients listed on the label. I told him to look for a package of almonds with ingredients of just one thing.....almonds. When he returned with the almonds he shared with me how frustrating it was to find a package with just one ingredient. But with a little extra time he was able to find a package and we enjoyed the healthiest version available, plain old almonds without all the extra added ingredients.

Many people are confused about how to live a vibrant happy life, so that's what I'm here for. To support anyone who wants help to experience vibrant health. So what exactly do I do? I educate my clients about how to choose wisely while shopping, eating and living. In a world where supermarkets are stuffed full of things that are not fit for human consumption, it is extremely important to know what to look for and what not be putting in your shopping basket.
So here's a tip for today. When shopping for groceries this week, start to read labels. If you find more than five ingredients on the label then you may want to consider finding another option. Now I realize that this might be a challenge at first. But trust me....it does get easier and in the long run you will learn which brands are the healthiest. This will save you time at the grocery store in the future and bring you one step closer to achieving vibrant health.
Happy shopping!
